Dizziness can make everyday tasks like rolling over in bed, looking up at a shelf or walking through a busy shop feel unpredictable. Many causes of dizziness and vertigo come from the inner ear and the balance system, and many of them respond well to targeted physiotherapy. At Step By Step Health in Mitchell, Canberra, we offer vestibular physiotherapy to help you get back to moving with confidence.

What is vestibular physiotherapy?

Your vestibular system sits in the inner ear and works with your eyes and body to keep you balanced. When it isn't working properly, you may feel spinning, unsteadiness or light-headedness. Vestibular physiotherapy uses a detailed assessment followed by specific treatments and exercises to reduce symptoms and retrain your balance.

Common conditions we help with

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the brief spinning that comes with certain head movements

  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis recovery

  • Dizziness after concussion

  • Ongoing unsteadiness and fear of falling

  • Motion sensitivity

What to expect at your appointment

Your first appointment includes a thorough history and assessment of your eye movements, balance and the positions that bring on your symptoms. Where it's appropriate, we can treat BPPV with repositioning manoeuvres in the same session. You'll leave with a clear explanation and a home exercise program to keep you progressing between visits.

When to see a doctor first

If your dizziness comes on suddenly with slurred speech, facial drooping, weakness, a severe headache or loss of vision, call 000 straight away. If you're unsure what's causing your symptoms, your GP is a great first step, and we're happy to work alongside them.
